Why Twitter is way overrated

Ok, we all have heard of Twitter. Obama uses Twitter, and by the way he also uses LinkedIn.

Here is the reason: Twitter only has 50,000 visitors in August 2007. Compare this to simple "auto lemon" site which I believe is making at least $4000/month. [ 1 percent of 100,000 visitors --> 1000 visitors --> 1000 visitors get auto quote at $4 per lead --> $4000 ]

However I have a reason to say why Twitter is overrated. I don't know what those folks at Odeo think they are doing. They seem to be so cool, chic, and collected. Well I just want to set the record straight that their stat is not promising.

Quite simply the stats are weak for Twitter. period.

You can easily compare Twitter with another promising startup (Kaboodle) and see that Twitter is way low.

Now we agree that Twitter claims majority of their traffic comes from their SOAP API -- well my argument is if those people never comes to your site, then do you own your audience? Contrast this with Facebook.

While i have no use for twitter, I believe they do have lots of traffic via their API. I bet most of it is SMS, and how can one generate cash? Attach a "pre-roll" ad to each SMS. They could add a premium service that will remove the ads. Not sure how this would effect user experience/uptake, but they haven't attempted to put any adverts on their service. I always thought of it as a more of a feature than a service. What's the barrier to entry? Maybe they could white-label it for the big 4 carriers.
